We know why you’re here. You’ve had it handling all of the baggage that comes with working in healthcare AND trying to juggle content strategy at the same time? Don’t worry. We honestly appreciate you looking for medical content writing services (it pays our bills)!

There are a lot of healthcare content writing services, all of which are vying for your attention. Shuffling through all of these while juggling the day-to-day struggle of working in healthcare is a lot.

Luckily for you, we’ve picked out some of the best content writing services that specialize in healthcare content. Some pros here. A pinch of cons there. You know the drill. Let’s get into it.

Things to consider

Before diving in, it’s important to note that there is no blanket right or wrong healthcare content service. One company’s Goldilocks may be another’s Kryptonite. However, there are some factors to consider when making a choice. Here are some of those, in no particular order.

  • Price: This one doesn’t really need an explanation, does it? If you have control over the company checkbook and don’t consider cost – well, that’s bad.
  • Your content preferences: Noting how much content and how often/quickly you want it is important. Don’t pay for content that you won’t use!
  • Interaction with writers: No one likes being on hold for hours or talking to robot customer service. Consider how much of that you can put up with, if any at all.
  • Industry expertise: If you need content written about topics that are complex and require healthcare expertise, weigh that.
  • Quality of work: If the quality isn’t good, why consider any of the other factors? They used “there” when they should’ve used “their” — run as fast as you can!

Even when considering all of these factors, the right decision may just be a gut check. Just use your best judgment when choosing someone to write your medical content. Writing services and practices vary from company to company.

Enough talk! There are patients to be helped, prescriptions to write, and lives to save! Let’s see which content writing services get the coveted Cucumber Blessing!

Verblio

Verblio is one choice for medical content writing services. Nearly 300 of their writers have healthcare industry experience, and half of those writers have 5+ years of experience. With around 3000 writers and no cap on word counts, they shine for big clients with big asks.

Verblio’s pricing is by word count, starting at $43 per 300 words. They offer add-ons and the option to choose how often you pay. Their rates are monthly, quarterly, or annually.

Verblio acts like a liaison for content writing. Their team consists of freelance content writers, with Verblio serving as the middle ground between the client and the writer. Freelancers can apply to become part of their pool. However, Verblio does boast that not just anyone can become one of their writers.

There are some things to watch out for with Verblio. One is the lack of a truly catered experience at times. There is no dedicated account manager included in the base subscription. You can upgrade your subscription to include a dedicated account manager, but it’s not included with all plans.

Each piece of content could be handled by a different writer. If clients don’t like the content they’re given, they can pass it to another writer or remove the content from their plan altogether.

This can be a double-edged sword. When a writer’s style isn’t good for a piece, a client can opt to have a different writer create their content. However, a one-on-one experience is, again, harder to create.

Good content takes time to make, and Verblio does understand this. Their writer’s content typically has a 72-hour turnaround, so same-day or next-day content is not a possibility. When it comes to content that is time-sensitive or needed quickly, Verblio would not be the best option.

Verblio gets the Cucumber Blessing (yes, this bit is going to keep happening) for their ability to provide for the biggest clients at the biggest level. If that’s not you, keep reading to see what your options are.

Compose.ly

Compose.ly is another service that offers healthcare content services. Their model is similar to that of Verblio’s. Many freelance writers are part of their network and offer their services through the platform.

One plus with Compose.ly’s services is the ability to choose how autonomous you want your plan to be. They offer two plans: the managed content service, starting at $999/month, and the self-service marketplace, starting with a 500-word blog post at $75.

The managed service is the less involved option and works best if you don’t want to be as involved in the creation process. A writer and editor independently create content and then present it when finished. The client has the final say on whether it gets published or not.

The self-service option is best for a la carte services. Writers work directly with clients. Clients act as their own editors in real time. This option is much more involved on the client side, so it is also more time-consuming.

Compose.ly’s most notable weakness lies with its managed content service, and that may seem familiar.

With the lack of involvement in the creation process, there are a lot of unknowns. This could lead to a disconnect between the client and the writing team or missed deadlines for posts.

Writers also have the ability to request projects get transferred to a different writer during the creation process, which could further increase the risk of inconsistencies or missed deadlines.

Compose.ly gets the Cucumber Blessing for its versatility. Their two main plan options allow the client to choose how much involvement they have in their content creation. The choice between a hands-on or more backseat approach opens them up to be a viable option in many scenarios. With their self-service option, they can be good for a la carte content.

Scripted

Scripted is yet another option. In contrast to the previous two, Scripted clients are much more involved in the creation process. Their two starting plans are both self-service, at $199 and $499/month for basic and premium plans, respectively.

They also offer larger-scale plans. Their “Agencies” plan starts at $2500/month and the “Enterprises” plan at $5000/month.

The experience with Scripted can be much more hands-on than the previous two options. Their self-service plans allow for a high level of involvement with the creation process. This can be both a pro and a con, depending on your situation.

Clients can choose a writer outright or put their needs out to a pool of writers. The second option works sort of like the inverse of the first, with writers giving proposals based on the content you need to be done.

With their scaling plans, Scripted offers a similar level of versatility as Compose.ly. They can work with smaller businesses or with larger clients, like their client Healthline.

Scripted’s system allows you to find the right writer for a given piece. Being able to choose from a pool of writers who specialize in healthcare pieces is no doubt a good thing.

The flip side of this coin is that because your writer may change from time to time, building a cohesive brand voice may be difficult. Multiple different people telling your brand’s story can cause some disconnect.

Scripted gets the third Cucumber Blessing of the day for their combination of versatility and in-depth involvement in the creative process. Their combination of small-scale and large-scale plans mirrors Compose.ly in a way.

WriterAccess

You see the heading. WriterAccess is next. Spoiler alert: they’re going to get the next Cucumber Blessing.

They have four plans with increasing levels of depth at $39/month, $99/month, $299/month, and $499/month. Content is purchased separately, with rates set by the writer themself at a price per word rate.

Because the rates are set by the writers, it allows clients to pick and choose how much they’re willing to spend on content (to an extent). Writers’ prices are usually indicative of their level of expertise and writing proficiency, so beware of going too cheap per word.

Before choosing a writer, clients can view their portfolio with sample work and read reviews from other people who have hired them.

Much like our previous services, WriterAccess offers healthcare writers – specifically medical and pharma writers.

They allow clients to save their favorite writers on the platform. The bigger the plan, the more writers you can save. If you find a writer who is really good at writing about certain topics or is just a good writer in general, save their profile to easily find later.

WriterAccess also offers an option that is more autonomous, with a dedicated account manager to focus on the “heavy lifting.” They call this their “managed service.” Plans under this criteria are separate.

There are two plans with fixed prices at $349/month and $749/month. They also have a custom option that can be catered more to your needs.

In all, WriterAccess gets the Cucumber Blessing for the option of choosing writers based on reviews, price, and expertise. The amount of client autonomy in the buying process is high.

SEOButler

SEOButler works slightly differently. Clients don’t have a subscription like they would with the previous services. Instead, they have a cart system similar to an online retail store, allowing clients to pick individual pieces of content and drop them in their cart.

They offer quite a few different options at different prices per word, ranging from $0.07/word for a blog post to $0.135/word for Surfer Optimized content.

SEOButler also offers discounts for bulk orders, starting at 10% off 5-49k word orders. 15% off for 50-99k, and capping it off at 20% off 100k+ word orders.

They do not specifically list medical writing in their services, but SEOButler still gets the Cucumber Blessing for both its bulk ordering and ability to create a content plan easily and precisely. Their cart system is great for bulk one-off projects.
