Unsung Heroes of the Holocaust Recognized
There were several heroes who saved lives from the Nazi Holocaust during World War II. Their stories have been told, but 45 years after his death, Jan Zwartendijk’s story is only starting to be told. The Dutchman is being featured in a biography titled The Just: How Six Unlikely Heros Saved Thousands of Jews from the Holocaust. As the consul, he issued 2,139 passport visas to Jewish families to the Dutch Caribbean colony of Curacao.
In all, Jan saved more people than Oskar Schindler of Schindler’s List fame. Japan’s Chiune Sugihara is another hero of the Holocaust. There’s no better news than when a person has the power and the will to save others.
