Attention everyone who used to buy flavored lip gloss for the “color,” but then secretly licked it off their lips: HipDot just released a makeup collection with Reese’s!
Of course, I don’t recommend actually eating this sweet-looking makeup collection (that’s what king-size candy bars are for) but it looks just as fun to create looks with.
HipDot, a makeup company that previously released a Tapatío hot sauce collection (try and lick that off your lips), partnered with the candy for a collaboration that just might beat chocolate and peanut butter.
The Reese’s Collection
The collection includes two eyeshadow palettes, appropriately named the milk chocolate and white chocolate palettes. Shades like “tasty,” which mimics the candy’s iconic orange wrapper, and the glittery gold, “snacktime,” are two of my favorites.
The collection also includes two scented lip balms in nude shades and two double-ended eyeshadow brushes. Both palettes include six different shades, and all products range in price from $14 to $18. Reese’s fanatics can even buy the whole bundle for $74.
The Chipotle collection
Although HipDot x Reese’s may be the sweetest collection yet, if you’re more of a savory person don’t fret! e.l.f. Cosmetics also released a collaboration with the Mexican food chain, Chipotle.
While the thought of sofritas lipstick may not draw you in immediately, the collection featured a bunch of cool eyeshadow colors based on their menu.
e.lf., which is known for its affordable prices, sold these items starting as low as $5 each. The collection also included lip plumping gloss inspired by their tasty salsa, a tortilla chip makeup bag and (my personal favorite) a makeup sponge duo that looked like an avocado.
More makeup x food collabs
Other makeup and food collabs include the Perfect Diary x Oreo collection and The Face Shop x Coca Cola collection. Both collaborations partnered popular food products with Asian beauty brands.
Perfect Diary, a Chinese cosmetic company, teamed up with Oreo to create cushioned compacts with limited, seasonal Oreo flavors. Each compact had two fun flavors: Matcha Sakura and White Peach Oolong. The collaboration did so well it sold out online on its first day.
The Face Shop, a South Korean beauty brand, worked with Coca-Cola to pioneer the soda company’s first makeup collaboration. The collection included an air-cushion foundation, oil clear blotting powder, eyeshadow, lipstick and lip gloss.
All the eyeshadow shades complemented the brand’s classic red packaging and brown fizzy soda.
Why these collabs work
Chipotle having a makeup line can elicit a range of emotions from people: excited or hungry. That’s also one of the reasons these collaborations work so well, they catch people’s interest.
Both food and makeup are constantly talked about on social media, so the combination of the two is bound to get people interested. Plus, chain restaurants like Chipotle and classic candies like Reese’s already have built-in fanbases, so why not partner with them?
Makeup brands also have loyal followers, so bringing two fan bases together can double the number of people interested in the product.
The previous success of food x makeup collections also makes cosmetic companies want to team up with food products more often. The fun, carefree nature of collections inspired by Reese’s and Chipotle fosters creativity from Gen Z, which leads to social media buzz. Thank you, TikTok.
Based on the recent success of these makeup collections, I’d expect to see a lot more whacky collaborations coming soon. While they may sound out there, and even like a cash grab, these collections can also breed a lot of creativity.
What’s wrong with having a little fun with your food?
